Pursuing the Blacksmithing Profession

As early as level 5 any character can begin to pursue the blacksmithing profession. Generally, all blacksmithing trainers can teach from Apprentice to Artisan blacksmithing. Specialization to become weapon or armor smiths (which will be discussed later) can be taught by trainers from Ironforge and Ogrimmar can teach them for you. Lastly, Master level blacksmithing can be taught by trainers in the Outland.

Like all professions, the only way to level up your profession is to continuously craft items that you can at your current level. Orange plans have 100% to level up. Color yellow means 50-75% of leveling up, green has 25%, and grey never levels up. As your level increases plans that were once in orange will change to yellow, green, and finally grey. To proceed to higher levels you have to look for higher level plans.

Specializations

As blacksmiths reach profession level 200 as well as at character level 40, they can choose to either become armor smiths or weapon smiths. Weapon smiths can also proceed to specialize as sword, hammer or axe smiths. Many of the most powerful weapons can be forged only by smiths who specialized in that particular weapon class.

Players can also choose to change their specialization but this is at a cost depending on the specialization to be changed and their current level.

Blacksmithing for money

Blacksmithing is a very lucrative profession as well. Much of the weapons that blacksmiths can forge can be sold or traded to other non-blacksmiths for their own use.
