Who is the Mage?

By choosing the race of either gnomes, humans, dreanei, undead, trolls or blood elves, the mage class becomes available for the player.

Totally different from warriors and hunters, mages heavily focus on magic in order to fight their battles and have the potential to deal unimaginably high damage to their foes. With the help of three types of magic, namely Arcane, Fire and Frost, mages can create a series of damage and effects making them relatively versatile in battle without depending on the strength of the sword.

While the mage has been designed to potentially deal an insane amount of damage through their magic, this does not mean that they are significantly superior to any other class in WoW. This is because the mage’s dependence on magic comes with heavy costs.

For one thing, mages are expected to keep their distance from their enemies because they can do very little to fight, let alone save themselves, if they are cornered by most warriors. They need much of the Intelligence stat to increase mana and spell damage, but don’t really do much for health and endurance. This is why some skills help mages keep their enemies at bay long enough to take them down.

And since their goal is to more or less kill their opponent in mere seconds with large singular bursts of damage, unexpected misses and resists could spell death for the unfortunate mage. If they run out of mana before their spells can reduce their opponent’s health, then the mage is left helpless. Mages also have very limited choices of armor so they can’t last long in battle if they take damage all the time. In short, mages are never really meant to be hit by their opponents in the first place.

Mage Magic and Builds

The Mage of WoW can specialize in three different elements: (1) Arcane, (2) Fire, and (3) Frost. These elements, which are actually the three talent trees of the class, basically dictate the basic builds that a mage player could take up for their character.

Arcane Mages are less likely to run out of mana as well as spells to cast compared to other mage builds, and still get to deal fairly high amounts of damage. This is because the Arcane talent tree helps mages not only improve their spell damage but be able to cast quickly and restore their mana as well. This ensures consistent damage per second, which can be useful especially in long battles.

Arcane magic has a lot of utility spells that prove useful to the mage, such as being able to conjure up food and drink as well as gems, as well as be able to remove buffs and curses instantly from themselves or their opponents. Arcane magic also improves mana regeneration.

Arcane magic, however, does not deal as much damage as Fire magic does at once. Users of this build will have to learn how to cast their spells quickly and avoid enemies while taking them down at a distance.
