World of Warcraft Mining
Guide
Mining is one of the many primary
professions in World of Warcraft. It allows players to
look for and gather a wide variety of earth resources such
as ore, minerals, and stones from deposits and veins found
throughout the game. While these resources are not
valuable in themselves in terms of selling price they are
needed by other professions such as the engineering,
blacksmithing and jewel crafting professions. This makes
mining a very lucrative and useful trade for all sorts of
races and classes.
This guide will give you an overview of what the mining
profession is about and will give some basic details necessary
for every miner in the World of Warcraft.
Mining – Basic Necessities
Mining, just like in real life, requires equipment in order
to take out hard valuable materials from their hard sources.
And just like in real life, you need a mining pick, which you
can buy from various NPC merchants. This pick must be present
in the character’s inventory in order for the mining skill to
be available.

Note: There are certain types of weapons that can be used as
substitute to the conventional mining pick. Weapons like
Brann’s Trusty Pick, Digmaster 5000, and Tunnel Pick, can also
be used to mine, which can save you that inventory space that
would otherwise be used for the mining pick bought in general
stores. The Gnomish Army Knife, though can’t be used as
weapons, can be used as an all-in-one alternative tool for all
gathering professions, which includes mining.
To use the mining skill, one must be near a mineral node.
These nodes are found everywhere in WoW, and they can be found
with the Find Minerals spell, which is acquired after gaining
the profession. Right click on the resource node and the mining
begins. If it is successful, a box will appear, where the
minerals can be found.
Note: Special mining bags can be acquired to automatically
gather ores.
After gathering resources, miners can choose to go to a
forge and have these minerals smelted into melted bars.
Smelting is a sub-skill acquired in the mining profession.
These melted bars are also useful for other professions.
Leveling the Miner
Like all other professions, constant practice of the
profession is what makes the miner’s skill level go up. In the
case of mining, the different veins found throughout the game
require different skill levels in order for the vein to be
mined. These veins are color coded like other crafting plans in
other professions:
Red means the miner’s skill level isn’t
enough yet to mine that vein.
Orange veins always give the miner a skill
level up.
Yellow gives a 75% chance that the miner’s
skill level goes up.
Green gives a 50% chance that the miner’s
skill level goes up.
Gray never increases a miner’s level, so don’t
waste your time with it.
Mining, like all professions, requires patience and
perseverance in looking for nodes and mining them to level up.
Work your way up the profession and you’ll be earning more and,
together with your other crafting professions, make powerful
weapons for yourself.
