Who is a Warlock?

Based on Warcraft lore, Warlocks used to be mages or druids who turned away from their old ways and decided to adopt Fel-based magic or the kind of magic which relied on the Shadow or dark magic in general. Thus, their magic usually cause chaos or immense pain and suffering to their enemies.

This is not to say, however, that warlocks are pure evil or that they serve the darkness, per se. warlocks are said to use their art for their own purpose and therefore not necessarily putting themselves in the lines of good and evil but rather aligning themselves with either the Alliance or the Horde. Only humans, gnomes, orcs, undead, and blood elves can take up the warlock class.

Because of this, warlocks are masters of the dark arts who often use chaotic fire magic or summon demonic forces. Warlocks can capture the souls of their targets and either choose to resurrect them or drain them for his regeneration. The warlock’s summoning skills also makes the class the second pet class in the game, but as opposed to the hunter, does not turn beasts to do their bidding, but rather uses soul shards and some reagents to summon a beast from another world.

Another thing that distinguishes a warlock from the mage is the manner in which they inflict damage. Warlocks are considered as DPS casters since most of the damage they deal involve effects or damage that occur to the target over time, as opposed to a mage whose casting usually inflicts large bursts of damage which can potentially kill a target instantly. Warlocks also use their summoned minions to their advantage as well as a wide variety of curses that either severely weaken their targets or send them running away in fear, resulting to effective crowd control.

Soul Shards: A Warlock Staple

Those who play the warlock will inevitably be introduced to the use of soul shards. These are items that are produced in so many ways as they are used. Soul shards are obtained by the Drain Soul spell or the Shadow Burn spell.

Generally, soul shards (along with other reagents) are needed by Warlocks to cast most of their very powerful spells as well as summon demon pets and enslave demons to fight for them. But the shards can also be used to summon a warlock’s party members to his side as well as create a wide variety of stones that will prove useful to him and his party such as healthstones, soulstones, firestones, and spellstones.
